Stress can be responsible for major medical complications, including heart problems, headaches, depression and more. Trying to balance your life can become a near impossible task. However, there are a few things you can do to cope with stress at work.
1. Take a break: The average person cannot concentrate for long periods of time. Trying to do so will actually be detrimental to your productivity. Take a short break every now and then. The worst possible thing you can do is eating lunch at your desk. Get away, even if you do not use your whole lunch break.
2. Keep in mind that nobody is perfect. Trying to perform perfectly at all times will mean putting incredible pressure on yourself. On the other hand, you have to keep in mind that the people you are working with are also not quite perfect. Expect them to make mistakes every now and then, and that you will have to adapt to it. Being prepared for the eventuality removes half the stress it creates when it happens.
3. Don't take your work home with you. Doing so will have a two way effect. Firstly, it puts unwanted strain on your family life, taking the pleasure of whatever social life you may have. Secondly, if you do not relax, you will eventually wear yourself down, hampering your own performance at work. Your time off should be quality time to prepare you for the next working day. Even if you still have the same amount of stress at work, you will be able to deal with it a lot easier.
4. Learn to say no: Many people take on work that should not be their responsibility, trying to keep the peace. If you do not stand your ground, everybody eventually uses you as a "dumping ground" for all the tasks they do not feel up to. You may end up being everybody's favorite, but you also end up creating a lot of stress for yourself.
5. Accept your limitations: Trying to do more than you are capable of is bound to result in huge amounts of stress at work. You are, despite your ambitions, only human like everybody else.
