America and Her Addiction for Foreign Oil
Our thirst for gasoline is affecting our economic vitality. It can take months to re-tool even advanced robotic factories. Changing from gasoline to alternative fuels is more than just a goal; it is a necessity. Critics say America stuck with Foreign Oil; can we kick the addiction?
Why not use the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) model, where people can buy conversion kits for their current cars. In General Aviation in the 80’s and 90’s it became too expensive to buy private aircraft due to the “Finished Products Liability Insurance” cost. This was due to the incessant lawsuits on manufacturers like Piper, Cessna and Beechcraft. The Federal Aviation Administration gave the nod to the EAA model, which allowed those who build their own aircraft or modified them to assume the risk and be put into a separate category of aircraft.
If we the people agree to reduce legal liability from lawsuits for car owners and entrepreneurs and allow them “Experimental Car” status, then those who wish to can buy kits, which will take existing cars and convert them to run on Ethanol from corn, soybean or grass, Bio Diesel and/or flex fuels. Folks would also have the option to buy kit cars, partially completed kit cars or components from the huge array of SEMA member automotive after market entrepreneurial type companies.
Of course the Large Automakers will have to innovate, compete and/or buy up these new innovative technologies or lose out. We will experience new markets open up in a race for better battery technologies, more efficient aerodynamic designs, lighter and stronger materials and hybrid cars. Consider this in 2006.
