Snooze Wars: The Battle Between The Sheets

A few months ago, I wrote a tongue-in-cheek piece titled, “Nap For Success.”
As I was scanning the ratings of my articles I noticed at least one reader hated it, awarding it a single star.
For a moment I thought about that person, and the millions of people he represents. I can imagine how he feels.
“I stay awake all day, and half the night, and so should you!”
Or, perhaps he’s thinking that there is something evil that just cuts against the grain of the work ethic in the hearts and souls of nappers.
Possibly he’s jealous that certain people are privileged enough to find time, or to make time for a few winks, here and there.
I can see that the world is divided into two groups: nappers and non-nappers, and they truly don’t understand each other.
Nappers wonder, “What’s the harm in it?” and non-nappers ask, “What’s the good in it?”
My dad napped, and my mom didn’t. She accused him of sloth, and he responded that she was insensitive, but if she wanted to talk about it, he’d be available in an hour, or so.
He looked refreshed almost all the time, and still got a lot accomplished. In fact, he was very efficient and effective, knowing what buttons to push to get leverage in his career.
Mom, bless her, looked tired.
I think she stayed awake worrying about dad’s napping.
You know there are cultures that have wholeheartedly embraced the afternoon nap, or siesta. Apart from staying awake long enough to have an occasional revolution, these societies seem quite peaceful.
That’s what being well rested will do for you.
The next time someone you encounter in business seems grouchy or negative or stressed out, ask yourself, “Could this person use a little more sleep?”
But I advise against asking them.
Like little kids, they’re the last to appreciate when they’re overly tired!
