Spyware is a computer application that stealthily installs itself in computers to gather data about the computer’s user. It can monitor surfing activities, gather user’s information, and control the computer in various ways. Spyware applications are capable of configuring computer settings such as automatically installing other computer programs or manifesting web browsing activity by directing the user to its desired site. They can also significantly affect computer’s connection by slowing it down or by completely disconnecting the computer to the internet.
Anti-spyware applications were immediately introduced to the market to resolve the growing problems with spyware. Many places adopted anti-spyware laws with the intention of if not eliminate at least control the damages created by these types of software applications. Spyware’s manner of infection is different from that of other computer viruses. It infects computer by disguising itself to deceive the computer user and channel installation on the most susceptible application.
Spyware application usually transports itself through a legitimate software application. Kazaa for example a peer-to-peer software application is popularly downloaded and is known to be legitimate software, can be a carrier of spyware. Spyware may sometime disguise itself as an additional feature of Kazaa which secures your computer from spyware. This type of spyware is called a rogue spyware.
Spyware are also sometimes distributed in useful utility forms of programs such as “Web accelerator”. This allows spyware application to install itself in the computer of the unsuspecting user. It is also sometimes bundled with many internet utility programs which are mostly free to attract more installation.
As people become more aware of the possible ways a spyware may infect their system, spyware distributors became more strategic in their ways of deception. Spyware authors are now creating malicious websites, which when viewed can attack the web browser’s weakness to forcefully install itself into the system.
Another way of possible spyware infection is via windows dialog box like pop-ups. These dialog boxes are very similar to a standard windows dialog box which can be very confusing. It offers internet access optimization which would provide you the option to click on the yes or no button. One you click any of the two options the spyware will automatically install in your system. Higher versions of Internet explorer are less vulnerable with this kind of spyware attack.
Some virus may also open access for spyware infection. Spybot worm for instance serves as the gate way for spyware, which commonly infects system with non-stop pornographic pop-ups on the computer’s screen.
Effects of Spyware
A noticeable manifestation of spyware is the lengthy response time of the infected computer. Spyware generally runs as a background application, which unnecessarily consumes memory and disk space resources as it operate.
Spyware infected computers usually carry more than one type of spyware or multiple spyware infections. These spyware programs can cause other applications to drop and fail to start. It also affects networking activities, which impair the quality of the internet connection.
Some spyware application has the ability to disable anti-virus programs and firewalls which creates even greater system vulnerabilities to other harmful programs.
