The answer is actually scary: You can never be one hundred percent sure you made the right choice. In time, you will realize whether you made a good choice or not, and you may even change your mind as your expectations change. There are, however, a few things you can keep in mind when making your career choice to lessen the probability of a bad choice.
Firstly, decide where your passion lies. Not just something you like, but something you are passionate about. You will be much more likely to be successful if you follow your passion. Some people may want to dissuade you from following a career in acting, saying there is no money in it. Yet those same people watch movies that paid the actors millions.
Have an aptitude test done. You may want to follow a dream for which you really do not have the capability, and if that is the case you will have to stand back and rethink the situation. However, if you have an aptitude for one thing, it does not mean you will not be able to make it at anything else. Talk to the person who did the test, and probe the results.
Lastly, explore the opportunities. You may want to be an iguana trainer, but there are no jobs for iguana trainers, leaving you with a market you may not be able to penetrate. On the other hand, do not simply set your mind on one job, but explore all the possible jobs you will be able to do with the skills you will be acquiring while you study or train.
You can never be sure, but you can choose carefully and have a better shot at being happy and successful at the same time. If, however, you ever come to realize that what you are doing is just not what you want, stop and get out before you live a totally unhappy life.
