The only reason for the title of this article to have the term ‘amongst’ inserted is because of my very conservative estimates for this year. Since they shot to fame following their launch, Nike Air Jordan have remained stuck to chart tops, and Nike on its part is doing just everything to make sure that it continues to be there.
There are several factors that contribute to their resounding and the most enduring success even after a decade of second retirement of “Air Jordans” after whom the sneakers are named. There are thousands of sneakerheads who are ready to shove hundreds of dollars; with the amount sometimes running into thousands, highlighting the cast the brand still commands over the market. It is very interesting to know what ensures Nike Air Jordan the enviable place for such a long time.
Market Savvy Nike Creates Craving for Air Jordans
I would rate the brand positioning strategy by Nike on top of all reasons for Air Jordans’ unmatched popularity and the lion’s market share it commands. The sneakers are released on one day only ensuring that they maintain an aura of mystery and curiosity and that the idea of retro does not pale out with time. Strategically, Air Jordans are released as a line of team shoes which are not connected to the signature line of Nike Air Jordan sneakers. In addition, one signature pair of shoes is reintroduced from its big portfolio year after year. Finally, you always have the regular fair of Retros, Retro pluses, Samples and Player Exclusive apart from the Originals.
Although this is not new to most Americans and the fans of Nike Air Jordan the world over, I would still like to cite another glaring example of market savvy of Nike. Nike fused two of its top brands, Air Jordans and Air Force to create and offer ‘lip smacking” merged brand Air Jordan x Air Force 1 Fusion.
Not So Positive Way to Measure Air Jordans’ Popularity
Late 1980s and 1990s saw a string of serious crimes which can be attributed to the high popularity of Air Jordans, straight forward. Although crime is no measure of popularity, the fact of the matter still remains that a good half of all the crimes are motivated by lures of one kind or the other, and to its misfortune, Air Jordans was connected many a crime.
It would be naïve to talk about the number of designs and styles of Air Jordans considering the Retroes, Retro Plusses and PEs within the all encompassing twenty three original releases. The choice of fantastic colorways, the often tinkered famous Nike swoosh apart from the jumpman and pigeon logos in choices of lighter or heavier constructions make it virtually impossible to describe in one word as to why Air Jordans are there where they are.
If you are not already sucked into whirl, just ask mass fake Nike Air Jardan peddlers, probably they would be able to tell you how difficult it is to avoid churning out all models Nike has released till date.
